Sunday 26th September 2004 - Brian Clough Tribute

2004 Events

Following the death of Brian Clough earlier in the month, the City of Nottingham paid tribute to Brian in an open air service in the Old Market Square.  Because of this tram services were suspended south of the Royal Centre until midday.  This was a photo of the tram tracks in South Parade about 11am, just before they sang "Abide with me".

The tram of the day, so to speak, 215 - Brian Clough was confined to "barracks" being stabled in the depot for the day.  The concern was that she would be packed solid by fans riding her all day after the tribute.  This is a photo of her the day previously resting between runs at Station Street, when she was working run 10 to and from

I spent a good part of the morning observing the operation at the Royal Centre.  The full workings I observed at the Royal Centre today were as follows:

10:05 to Hucknall, tram 210.

10:14 to Phoenix Park, tram 208, working duty 303/run 3, ex 9:44 Phoenix Park - this should off been   This is the tram I arrived on, picking it at 9:52 at Wilkinson St.  The tram waited time at NTU for instructions etc before proceeding to the Royal Centre.

10:25 to Hucknall, tram 207, duty 301 run 1.

10:34 to Phoenix Park,  Duty 205/run 6

10:45 to Hucknall, tram 202, duty 306

10:54 to Phoenix Park, tram 213

11:05 to Hucknall, tram 208

11:14 to Phoenix Park, tram 210, duty 307/run 7.  There were special duty cards for the day, the duty card for duty 307 had the right day, ie Sunday, but was the wrong date 29th September 2004.  The duty cards were white, rather then the normal Sunday yellow.

There was a bit more information then on the NET website regarding the disruption to the tram services.  When asked the day before the conductors either did not know or they had heard a rumour about services terminating at the Royal Centre.  The above PID was taken at the Royal Centre, the message was too long and is continued below.

This PID was at Wilkinson St,  I got the 9:44 tram, which is the one at "1" minute.  Note the second tram being shown as Station St.  The PIDs at stops along the line showed the above with no indication of when the through service would restart.

The only PID giving useful info about the restart was at Old Market Square, see above.  I presume Lace Market and Station St would off displayed the same.  However NET control were making regular PA announcements about the restart of services.

Despite the northbound platform PID at the Royal Centre telling people to use the other platform, a few people were seen hanging around the northbound platform waiting for trams.  They had to be told be the tram crew to cross the line.

The normal Sunday service from about 10am is a tram every 20 minutes to each of Phoenix Park and Hucknall.   This gives a frequency of a tram every 10 minutes in the city centre and requires 7 trams working dedicated runs to each destination, 3 to Phoenix Park and 4 to Hucknall.  With trams turning short at the Royal Centre, only 6 trams were required and the tram runs were changed to alternate desitintaions.  This is tram 208, which formed the 10:14 departure for Phoenix Park.  The driver of the tram drove up to the points and then set them.  All other drivers I observed set them whilst the tram was in the stop.

Having pulled across the points to the stop line for the tram/traffic lights tram 208 then waited for the signal to clear.  Whilst doing so the tram was still fouling the crossover.

Tram 205 which formed the 10:34 departure for Phoenix Park, is seen heading north wrong line towards the crossover.  The tram hazards lights were flashing for the wrong line manoeuvres.  Note NET had thoughtfully cleaned the points of dirt before the operation as can be seen by the dirt between the rails.

Tram 202 has just arrived at the Royal Centre and its passengers are setting off to the shops or the tail end of the Tribute.  This was the 10:14 ex Phoenix Park, which then went back as the 10:45 departure to Hucknall.

Tram 202 heading north to Hucknall passing tram 213 at the top end of Goldsmith Street.  Tram 213 has come from Hucknall as the 10:22 departure, which then formed the 10:54 to Phoenix Park.

The extra, seventh tram went into service at 11:44, ex Depot as an "Out of service tram" to Station St.  As far I know this ran OOS all the way to Station Street.  This was formed by tram 212.

In addition to the wrong date, I noticed at least one duty card with the wrong time, which would explain the sight of tram 213 being held at Wilkinson St on the 11:26 to Royal Centre, waiting for its relief crew, who turned up at 11:30!.
