2004 Events

The Light Rail Transit Association (LRTA) held its AGM in Nottingham on Saturday 16th October 2004.  As part of a programme of events, a tram tour of the NET line 1 system and depot was held the following morning. Above is my ticket for the tour.  On the Saturday members toured the route of the extensions by coach.

Our tour tram was preceded by a service tram and the PID displayed "Not in service" for the tour tram.

The tour started in Old Market Square, I presume this being a good starting point with many of the participants staying in the city centre overnight.  Whilst waiting for the tour, why not have a grice!.  Tram 210 is on a Station Street service having formed the 08:52 from Hucknall working Run 3, this would be service 03SB, whilst tram 202 is on a Phoenix Park service, ex 09:15 Station Street, working run 1, this would be service 01PC.

The gricers gather for their tour tram, as tram 211 with "Special" as its destination draws into Old Market Square Tram stop.  NET control announced over the tannoy that tram 211 was a special for the LRTA.  However such detail is lost on Joe Public!

Most of the people were keen to get on the tram, however, the tram waited at Old Market Square for about 10 minutes before departing.

The driver had the special schedule to hand beside him.  A transcript of the schedule is provided on another page.

From Old Market Square, the first stop was Station Street, no preferred platform.  Here the special is alongside tram 209 which is about to form the 09:45 to Phoenix Park working run 4, as 04PC

From Station Street the tram proceeded to Hucknall via the middle road at the Forest.  Our entry into the middle road was delayed by tram 215 which was working a test run loaded with sand bags.  We waited at The Forest to allow the following tram to pass us, and for photos to be taken.

Tram 206's arrival at Hucknall was disrupted by tram 215 occupying the preferred platform, that mean she went into the non-preferred platform, and the tour tram 211 had to use the preferred platform.  The track bashers hopped onto tram 206 which formed the 10:42 to Station St, as 02SC, as far as Butlers Hill, where the tour stopped to pick them up.

After Hucknall, the tram proceeded to Highbury Vale crossover, and then reversed over the crossover to take the Cinderhill branch to Phoenix Park, where it used the non preferred platform.

From Phoenix Park the tram proceeded to Wilkinson Street, where the tram then entered the depot via the delta. See separate drivers eye view of the depot and depot tour pages.  The point indicator is showing stop as the points are not fully thrown.  Note the mark in the photo is a bit of left over tape on the drivers side of the cab glass.

After the depot tour the tram returned to Station Street via the middle road at The Forest.  Here is the tram approaching the junction of Noel Street with Gregory Boulevard, with the points indicator set for the middle road.

Upon arrival at Station Street, the tour officially ended in the non preferred platform and tram 206 displayed "Out of Service".

Tram 212 was in the preferred platform displaying Station Street.  This is unusual as the trams normally reset their destination boards they enter Station Street.

Tram 212 departing as the 13:20 to Hucknall, run 6, 06HD, still displaying Station Street.  I wonder how long it was before "Wendy" got upset and this was corrected?

Tram 211 all ready to go back to Wilkinson Street as an ECS.  But no the organiser and a few others wanted to go back to Old Market Square and Wilkinson Street, including yours truly.  So it set off as a "Special" again.

Tram 211 at Wilkinson Street about to enter the depot.  Due to the entry from Shipstone Street being temporally out of action, the tram had to proceed into the north bound platform, pull forward to the crossover and then then reversed.  Tram 204 is waiting beyond the crossover on the 13:38 ex Phoenix Park, run 7, working 07SE.

About a dozen gricers stayed on the tram Wilkinson Street and few were there to photograph 211 returning to the depot.
